OpenAI Malaysia Capacity Deal Tests SPY Dividend Cash
OpenAI just locked dedicated compute at two Malaysia sites run by Nvidia backed Firmus. Contracted capacity at the Australian builder now sits above 900 megawatts. That is a real build, not a slogan, and it lands in the same week as circular financing fears around SPY, a rich AMD multiple, and a $40 oil call that would rewrite energy payouts.
OpenAI books Malaysia capacity on Nvidia chips
Firmus and OpenAI announced a multi year partnership. OpenAI becomes an anchor customer at two Malaysia AI factories. Those sites sit inside a seven factory map across Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Two plants already run. Five more target service over the next 24 months.
The silicon is Nvidia from rack to cooling loop. Firmus will roll out Vera Rubin NVL72 systems at scale across Asia Pacific, tied to Nvidia’s DSX factory platform. Astra, launched last week, was trained on about 100,000 Grace Blackwell machines. Nvidia chief Jensen Huang said 400,000 more GPUs are coming online next. He also said AGI has arrived. Treat the slogan as marketing. Treat the GPU count as a capex plan.
Firmus was valued above $10.5 billion in its last raise, with Nvidia, Jane Street, Blackstone funds, and Coatue on the cap table. A 2026 listing is still rumored. Contract value was not disclosed. Malaysia is already Southeast Asia’s fastest growing data center market, and the build has drawn local pushback on electricity and water. Capacity booked is not cash collected.
Circular financing is old plumbing, SPY is the bet
Critics call the AI build a loop. Chipmakers fund labs. Labs book compute. Clouds buy more chips. Nvidia has taken large equity stakes in customers and has discussed residual value guarantees that can run into the tens of billions. That looks messy on a slide.
It is also ordinary vendor finance. Plane makers, telecom gear shops, and retailers have done versions of this for decades. The cash still has to show up as tokens sold, seats paid, or software billed. If demand holds, the loop moves risk to specialists. If demand stalls, the same loop parks losses inside a handful of mega cap names.
Index funds do not get a vote. SPY, IVV, and VOO all carry the same AI weight. Holding those three is not diversification. It is one bet with three tickers. Small cap and value stocks are the boring hedge. The heat on AI is less about circular checks and more about how young the cash conversion still is.
AMD now prices richer than Nvidia and Broadcom
AMD posted record second quarter sales of about $11.5 billion, up 50 percent year over year. Data center revenue more than doubled. That print is real.
The stock still trades at a blended price to earnings near 72 times. Nvidia sits near 30 times. Broadcom sits near 34 times. Nvidia last closed around $230, a few percent under its 52 week high. AMD’s gross margin also sits well below those two peers.
Growth can justify a premium. It cannot justify a premium forever when the leader is cheaper and more profitable. Ark Invest even trimmed AMD by about $8 million last week while buying roughly $45 million of Rocket Lab and $37 million of Block, and cutting Palantir and Tempus AI. Growth money is rotating inside the theme, not leaving it.
A $40 oil call tests energy cash
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said crude could fall toward $40 or $50 a barrel once the Iran conflict eases and bottled up supply hits the market. Brent was recently above $95. West Texas Intermediate sat near $91. He also tied the oil spike to the highest 10 year yield correlation in years.
Income investors should treat that as a scenario, not a calendar date. Energy dividend stocks look generous while oil is tight. They look fragile if crude halves. Bond yields would likely ease in that world, which would help rate sensitive payers. Until the barrels actually show up, payout math still runs on $90 oil, not $40 oil.
What this means for income investors
SPY is an AI capacity vehicle now. Malaysia megawatts and Astra training runs keep that weight in place. Yield from the index stays thin while those names reinvest.
Circular financing is not proof of a bubble by itself. Concentration is. Pair the index with cash paying value and small caps that do not need 900 megawatts of contracted load to make the year.
Do not mix AI growth multiples with energy payouts. AMD at 72 times earnings and oil at $40 are different machines. One is a bet that tokens keep selling. The other is a bet that barrels stay scarce. Income only comes from the cash that actually clears.
